Australia takes in 20,000 fewer permanent migrants after migration crackdown

The number of permanent migrants to Australia has hit its lowest level in 11 years.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, just under 163,000 people were approved for migration between July 1 2017 and June 30 2018 – a drop of 10 percent from the previous 12 months and the lowest in 10 years.  This is attributed to a crackdown on fraudulent claims and a 46% increase in visa refusals.

“We are looking more closely at the applications that are made, making sure that we’re bringing the best migrants possible into our country,” Dutton told Australia’s Channel 9.

According to reports, skilled migrant numbers dropped by more than 12,000 while the family stream was cut by 15 percent.
