The Australian employment minister, Eric Abetz, denies the consideration of foreign employees as inexpensive labor.
Australia’s employment minister said that there is a misconception that foreign employees are source of inexpensive labor and opposes the opinion of hiring foreign employees to evade the costs of giving jobs to Australian nationals.
He said that skilled overseas workers provide a significant enhancement to the Australian labor market force where there is a scarcity of employees.
He added that sponsors of overseas employees must face additional expenses, which do not require while employing native employees, showing a clear economic hindrance in employing foreign employees over Australian workers.
Australia’s assistant minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Michaelia Cash, has said that firms sponsoring subclass 457 visa holders are exposed to sponsorship responsibilities that include a dedication to non-discriminatory employment as well as a proof that appropriate Australian employees are not available.
She mentioned that all the short-term visa holders, which includes backpacker and subclass 457 visa holders, should be engaged in line with the appropriate Australian workplace rule, including awards, agreements, workplace safety, superannuation as well as taxation law and workers’ compensation.
All the visa holders must also fulfill appropriate Australian licensing as well as certification requirements. The employees of Australia can’t be dented by employees on 457 visas. As per the market charges and conditions the amount paid for foreign worker would be similar to the income paid to an Australian worker in the similar job, she explained.
She further added that if the market income rate for the particular position, i.e. to be sponsored doesn’t go beyond the TSMIT (Temporary Skilled, Migration Income Threshold), then the individual would not be able to get access to the subclass 457 visa program.
In the meantime, the government of Australia has announced the amendments to the Pacific Seasonal Worker Program to better maintain farmers as well as to respond to societal concerns.
